Green Zone Training
GZ-101

Simply defined in the military, “Green Zone” is referred to as a “safe place.” Institutions of higher learning have adopted what is called, “Green Zone Training” for faculty and staff. This training is geared towards creating awareness about the experiences and struggles faced by student veterans as they transition to academia, as well as provide sound practices and procedures to help the student veteran succeed. The Green Zone training should provide an in-depth understanding and knowledge-base of military culture, and the common experiences and struggles of service members, veterans and their families. All faculty and staff who complete the training receive a Green Zone decal that allows students to recognize their certification.

Vocal Visibility: Amplifying Your Voice in the Workplace
LTD 134

Developed and facilitated by Learning and Talent Development Specialist Kimberly McLaughlin Smith, this introspective session encourages participants to recognize the inherent worth of their voices. The session fosters the notion that each person is deserving of self-advocacy and has the power to uplift less empowered voices around them. There’s a quiet strength earned moment by moment when we find the inner courage to speak up.

During the session, participants will reflect on the journey of their voice from early childhood to the present —exploring their earliest experiences with using it and considering how freely they express themselves when stakes are high, and courage is low. Through small group interactions and large group discussions, attendees will deepen their understanding of speaking out and speaking up. Our hope is that each participant emerges willing to take slow but steady steps toward becoming their own advocate, and less of a longer  “silent sufferer” in the workplace.
